Normal and Abnormal Events

When you go into labor, call the South Georgia Medical Center at (229) 333-1000. First time mothers, call when contractions are five minutes apart or less and/or if your water breaks. All other mothers call when contractions are seven minutes apart or less and/or if your water breaks.

Because of your increased blood volume and/or high levels of estrogen and progesterone, the following are additional common complaints that are normal in pregnancy:

  • Shortness of breath,
  • Urinary frequency,
  • Fatigue,
  • Feet swelling,
  • Nasal dryness, stuffiness,
  • Nose bleeds,
  • Bleeding gums,
  • Insomnia,
  • Extremities falling asleep,
  • Varicose veins,
  • Corneal changes, dry eyes. (Do not have an eye exam as the shape of the cornea is changed until three months after delivery or six weeks after breast feeding is discontinued.)
  • Headaches,
  • Rib and sternal pain,
  • Dizziness,
  • Round ligament pain,
  • Back pain, and
  • Breast pain.
Pregnant Woman- Back Pains

Symptoms that you need to call the office about are those related to preterm labor and:

  • Persistent headache, especally after 28 weeks,
  • Blurred or spotty vision,
  • Sudden swelling of the face and hands, and the
  • Inability to keep food or liquids down for two days.
